EPA, DHA and Depression Dosage
How much fish oil is necessary for mental health benefits?
Obviously we need to ask our health practitioner, but to start, we can look at some studies about the dosage of EPA and DHA required, and whether DHA or EPA themselves alone would help.
You can see an excellent chart for dosages - the outcome is that these studies are for 1-4 grams, sometimes up to 9 grams of fish oil per day. Some of the studies list mg of EPA/DHA, and some simply list "fish oil".
Take a look at the chart above - some of the studies are only testing for EPA. Since we are not interesting in conducting studies, my personal practice is simply 2 g of fish oil per day containing DHA and EPA. It is hiqh quality fish oil - Innate Choice is the brand, and approximately 750 mg EPA - 500 mg DHA and 300 mg of other omega 3.
There are of course other brands, but I think the point is that most of the studies are requiring 500 mg of DHA and 500 mg of EPA. You do need a high quality fish oil to easily take that - otherwise you need a few teaspoons/capsules.
